With the best will in the world you can make a difference to Australia’s future

Habitat Australia, Feb, 1999 by Don Bailey, Janet Bailey

People like Don and Janet Bailey care passionately about this country. They want to see Australia’s natural heritage protected and conserved for future generations. With this in mind, the Baileys have decided to include ACF in their Wills.

IN OUR LIFETIME we have all witnessed environmental triumphs and environmental disasters. Over the years, ACF has been at the forefront of hard-fought campaigns that have won protection for areas such as Antarctica, the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree and the Franklin River. ACF’s success in these enduring campaigns has been supported by many generous bequests, the first of which was received in 1973.

Unfortunately, many significant areas remain unprotected and the assaults on the integrity of others are relentless. The Great Barrier Reef is threatened by oil shale mining, tropical rainforests are still being cleared, endangered species are being lost and encroachment on our national parks is widespread.

Taking the long-term view

It is ACF’s role to constantly defend the wins of the past and gain new ground for the future. Such an approach often requires decades of commitment to a particular campaign

Davis rues lost chance for place in world semis

0 Comments | Sentinel, The; Stoke-on-Trent (UK), Jul 7, 2010

ADAM Davis reluctantly returns to action at the Foster’s World 8- Ball Pool Championships today, but was denied another chance to become men’s singles champion.

The Stoke insurance broker represents his country in a team semi- final against the Republic of Ireland.

However, Davis’s main reason for travelling to Blackpool’s Imperial Hotel ended in disappointment last night.

The 23-year-old sixth seed from Meir Hay lost 9-8 to defending champion Phil Harrison in the opening quarter-final.

However, Davis is still wondering how he missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the Pounds 25,000 event.

He led 5-2 and 8-6, but allowed Harrison to come back to snatch the match victory.

“I missed an easy finish to win the match,” said this season’s double IPA Tour champion.

“But I struggled throughout the game. In fact, I played as I had done throughout the rest of the tournament.

“I have only got myself to blame. I just don’t know why I struggled like I did.”

Harrison, who has overcome profound deafness to reach the top of his sport, admitted: “I am really relieved.

“I was pleased to only be 5-3 down at the interval because I thought Adam should have led 6-2. “But I didn’t really worry that I was in trouble. I just played each ball as it came

Bus station is closed over health and safety concerns [Edition 4]

0 Comments | West Briton, The; Truro (UK), Apr 29, 2010

PUBLIC safety fears closed Truro Bus Station on Monday as “subsidence issues” required emergency repairs.

Bus services were disrupted and passengers were rerouted across the city as the exit to the station was cordoned off around a large hole in the brick surface.

A group of drivers stood across the entrance to the station in a line.

A handwritten sign said: “Owing to urgent repairs to the entrance of this bus station please consult the departure sheets on windows. We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.”

Bus operator First Devon and Cornwall said “subsidence issues” posed a risk to their buses, which instead picked up passengers from Green Street, Lemon Quay and Haven House.

Richard Taylor, of Cornwall Council’s highways department, said the station had been looked at the previous week and it was decided that urgent work was needed as “it had become a safety issue”.

He said sand is moving around underneath the surface bricks leaving them uneven but tests on Monday found the foundations were “properly engineered up through and seem to be fine”.

“When we dug the bricks up in one particular spot there was no sand left,” he said.

“It’s not right or what we would expect to happen but the bus station hasn’t got to be moved because of this issue.”

The hole has been filled with tarmac, the same solution used in other parts of the station in the past.

“It’s a quick fix to get it done while we run the buses,” said Mr Taylor. “Keeping the station in operation is all about safety. Lots of patching has been done over the years.

“The temporary repairs have held up before but now it’s looking patchy.

“It’s safe enough

Spinning is also a great cardio exercise because you can stick with it year round. It is not affected by weather or other adverse conditions you may find when exercising outdoors.

Spinning has many health and fitness benefits, including weight loss, cardiovascular, and muscle building. Many spinners agree that spinning is the best cardio workout you can do. Many spin enthusiast also claim spinning it is the hardest and best workout they have ever found. I would have to agree. There is no other workout that leaves me feeling like I just accomplished a huge feat and went beyond what I thought my body was capable of. And although it is” “hard” in its intensity, it isn’t hard for beginners to start. Its also no impact by nature so your feet and knees won’t hurt. This makes spinning a great workout for people of all ages, even older adults with joint problems.

Spinning even helps increase lung capacity and cardiovascular health.

A fine bromance

A fine bromance

0 Comments | Dominion Post; Wellington, New Zealand, May 29, 2009 | by CARDY Tom

Paul Rudd has made a name for himself in hit comedies. In his latest, I Love You, Man, he just wants to be friends – with any man he can find, writes Tom Cardy.

——————–

THANKS to his roles in a string of earthy and occasionally racy romantic comedies, including The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, American actor Paul Rudd has found himself in an unlikely position in just a few short years – a Hollywood leading man.

In I Love You, Man Rudd plays Peter, a real estate agent, who proposes to his girlfriend, Zooey (Rashida Jones). But he realises that, unlike his fiancee, who immediately calls her closest friends to share the news, he has no close buddies – in fact, he has no male friends at all

Local apartment vacancies plunged to 9-year low during the 2nd

Gazette, The (Colorado Springs), Jul 27, 2010 by RICH LADEN

Colorado Springs-area apartment vacancies fell to 5.8 percent in the second quarter, the lowest vacancy rate since 5.4 percent in the third quarter of 2001, according to a report released today by the Colorado Division of Housing and the Apartment Association of Southern Colorado.

Troop increases at Fort Carson and a lack of new apartment construction were cited as reasons for the falling vacancy rate, said Gordon Von Stroh, a University of Denver business professor who authored the report.

Even with an increased demand and a relatively fixed supply of rental units, average apartment rents have increased only slightly. The average monthly rent in the second quarter rose to $719.22 from $717.65 during the same period a year ago.

“Average rents have increased in the area, but a lack of job growth across the region will keep some downward pressure on rents,” said Ryan McMaken, a Division of Housing spokesman. “This rent data is from June, and June employment data shows that year-over-year employment in El Paso County fell by about 7,000. It’s tough for apartment owners to raise rents in such an environment.”

Hard work and learning on the job stands Paul in good stead

0 Comments | Express & Echo; Exeter (UK), Jul 23, 2010

Who’s who NAME, AGE AND CURRENT POSITION: Paul Slater, 45, branch manager, Rathbones Investment Management, Exeter.

FIRST JOB (AND PAY PACKET): I initially worked part time for Morrisons Supermarkets in the wines and spirits division while studying in my home city, Leeds. I can’t remember the pay packet but it didn’t stretch far.

I then became a share dealer at Yorkshare, which is a subsidiary of Yorkshire Building Society. The salary there was Pounds 11,000 a year. S

WHAT I’VE DONE IN MY CAREER AND HOW I GOT WHERE I AM TODAY: I have worked as an equities dealer, dealing manager, private client adviser, and training and competence manager.

I’ve also passed the Chartered Insurance Institute’s Financial Planning Certificate and Diploma in Financial Planning, together with the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment’s Securities Representative Certificate and Diploma. In terms of where I am today it is really just down to hard work, lots of learning on the job and being prepared to move around the UK to enhance my career opportunities.

CAREER HIGH POINT: Joining Rathbones’ Exeter office was a major high point for me. It’s a great team and a fantastic environment to work in. Plus, I love living and working in Exeter.

CAREER LOW POINT: The main low point was missing dealing in stocks while in a training and competence role. In fact, the role proved to be really interesting, but it was quite isolated and I missed the daily buzz of the markets. It was a great experience, however, and has stood me in good stead throughout my career.

WHEN I’M NOT WORKING I LIKE TO: Keep fit, including swimming and visiting the gym.

I also enjoy reading in my spare time as well as walking and visiting the sights of Devon. THINGS I’VE LEARNED THAT I WISH I’D KNOWN WHEN I STARTED: There are lots of things I wish I had known when I started out. The most valuable thing is to take a more measured approach when buying stocks — don’t just jump in. Also, to be patient with investments and be prepared to stick with them over the long term to secure the best return. MY ADVICE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN BUSINESS NOW: It might be a cliche, but you have to constantly improve your knowledge

Lesser-known conflict in spotlight

0 Comments | Patriot Ledger, The; Quincy, Mass., Jul 26, 2010 | by Fred Hanson

Braintree

Much of the French and Indian War was fought on the outskirts of the 13 American colonies, but it helped shape some famous events in local history.

“It was one of the lesser known conflicts, but it led to the American Revolution,” said Norah Kyle, program director for the Braintree Historical Society.

That’s because the taxes the British imposed to cover the cost of the war, which ran from 1754 to 1763, fueled anger among the American colonists. Two years after the war’s end, the British imposed the Stamp Act, and a Braintree town meeting passed a resolution opposing the tax known as the “Braintree Instructions.” It was drafted by a young lawyer named John Adams.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Braintree Historical Society sponsored a French and Indian War encampment on the grounds of the Sylvanus Thayer House.

The event brought together re-enactors wearing replicas of the uniforms of French and British soldiers of the period, as well as Native Americans who fought on both sides of the conflict.

“This is another way to teach history,” said John Rice of Plymouth, a history teacher who also works at Plimoth Plantation.

Rice portrayed one the the Metis, people of mixed European and Native American blood. He also played songs from the period on his violin.

In the encampment, European soldiers slept in tents without floors while Native Americans took shelter in lean-tos. There was also a demonstration of cooking, with a duck roasting on a spit over an open fire and ears of corn roasting around the fire pit.

Matthew Mees of Braintree took the role of a French soldier of the period, complete with a Saint-Etienne flintlock with bayonet
